Before collecting a rental car in Orlando, decide how you will pay road tolls. The rental rate and the toll arrangement are separate decisions, and a convenient-looking option can add charges beyond the toll itself.

For eligible visitors picking up and returning a rental at Orlando International Airport, Visitor Toll Pass is worth comparing. It is a temporary hangtag from the Central Florida Expressway Authority, not a free-roads pass: you still pay the tolls you use.

Here is how to work out whether it fits, what to do at MCO and what to check if it does not.

First Check: Are You Eligible?

CFX describes a round-trip MCO rental program. You must collect and return the rental at Orlando International Airport (MCO) through a participating on-airport company.

The current FAQ lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty. Trips can last up to 90 days.

Do not assume eligibility for:

  • A rental collected at Orlando Sanford airport.
  • An off-airport location reached by a shuttle from MCO.
  • A peer-to-peer rental or a company not on the participating list.
  • A one-way rental returned in Miami, Tampa or another location.

A flight into MCO alone does not meet the conditions. Check the actual rental location on your booking, not only the brand. MCO's rental-car directory distinguishes on-airport companies from off-airport operators.

If your plan changes to a different return location, resolve the toll arrangement before leaving. Do not build a one-way itinerary around a pass intended for a round-trip MCO rental.

What Does It Cost?

CFX says Visitor Toll Pass has no service fee and charges the electronic toll rate. Reservation involves a $10 deposit, applied toward tolls when the hangtag is returned. This is not a flat $10 package covering unlimited driving.

With the tag returned, unused deposit money is refunded. A missing tag costs $10, and the deposit no longer offsets tolls. Review the current billing terms.

For comparison, separate three things on any rental-company offer: the toll rate, the service fee and when that service fee is triggered. A daily administration charge and an all-inclusive daily package are not interchangeable. Ask for the exact terms for your reservation rather than accepting “tolls are covered” as the full answer.

Reserve Before Travel, Collect at MCO

Follow the official setup instructions in the Visitor Toll Pass app. Set the correct trip dates and have a working payment method and phone available.

Pickup machines are near the rental counters on Level 1 in Terminals A and B and Level 4 in Terminal C. Scan the app's code to collect the hangtag. Those are tag pickup locations, not directions to every rental company's cars; use airport and company signs for the correct garage.

Build this into your arrival sequence:

  1. Find your rental booking and confirm the pickup location.
  2. Collect the toll tag before heading out of the airport.
  3. At the car, check the actual license plate and issuing state.
  4. Enter the vehicle details in the app and hang the tag from the rearview mirror before leaving.
  5. Once safely parked, review any activation or vehicle-linking notifications.

Do not update an app while driving. A passenger can check messages, or you can wait until stopped somewhere safe. Keep your rental agreement handy in case you need to resolve a vehicle mismatch.

Avoid Paying Through Two Programs

CFX instructs users to decline the rental company's toll program. Avoid leaving two toll-payment arrangements active. Tell the rental company which method you plan to use and confirm any instructions for its fitted toll device.

For your own transponder, verify rental and route compatibility with its issuer. CFX's Uni guidance requires the same vehicle class, notification to the rental company, and adding then removing the rental plate from your account. Linking can take up to 48 hours. E-PASS stickers cannot be moved between cars.

Where the Pass Works

Visitor Toll Pass works on Florida toll roads and express lanes where E-PASS, SunPass or LeeWay are accepted. That wider coverage can be useful if your round-trip MCO rental includes travel beyond Orlando. It does not remove the airport pickup-and-return requirement.

For an Orlando-to-Miami trip, the distinction matters: driving south and returning the car at MCO is different from leaving it in Miami and flying home there.

Do not assume carrying cash solves every route. Check accepted payment methods for the roads you will use. CFX explains that unpaid rental-car tolls can produce a bill to the rental company, which may then charge the renter along with additional fees. Simply declining a toll package is not itself a payment method.

If Your Car or Trip Changes

Update the app if you extend the rental or change vehicles. Check the plate against the replacement car rather than assuming the old details remain suitable. If the app reports a problem, use the official support contact in the app or on the program's website.

Keep the rental agreement, toll activity and any rental-company bill until the charges make sense. If the same journey appears on two statements, compare the date, vehicle and location before disputing it. Contact Visitor Toll Pass support for an apparent duplicate rather than paying a request received through an unfamiliar message link.

Return the Tag Before Security

At the end of the trip, remove the tag from the rental car and return it to a designated Visitor Toll Pass drop box in Terminal A, B or C. Check the program's return map beforehand, especially if you will be rushing for an early flight.

Put “remove and return toll tag” beside “refuel and remove personal belongings” on your departure checklist. Returning the car does not automatically return the hangtag, and leaving it on the mirror is not the intended return process.

If you are still deciding whether to rent at all, compare the full bill against our car-free Orlando transportation guide. Parking and the hotel location may matter more to your budget than the tolls.
